Excellence in Research

The Excellence in Research Award recognizes and encourages excellence in academic research, creative activity, scholarship, and contributions to expanding knowledge or its application in their field by faculty at Florida Polytechnic University.

Nominations should be based on a record of the past three years of the faculty’s research/scholarly productivity, which is evidenced by items like a recent publication of particularly high-quality; recent receipt of research funding or partnership; patents; sustained industry partnership involving creative work in their technical area; career or other external awards; or other meritorious achievement.

To be eligible, a candidate must hold a full-time faculty position at Florida Polytechnic University, and must have served in that position for a minimum of two full semesters. Faculty members may not submit themselves for consideration for recognition.

A recipient will not be eligible to receive the award again in any of the four years following the year in which they receive an award. Those nominated during a year they are ineligible to win may defer such nominations and apply in the fifth year after the year in which they won, and only with evidence of continued research excellence.

Research Portfolio
Each nominee who wishes to be considered for the award, must provide supporting material to help the Research Award Selection Committee evaluate the quality and impact of their research. This material should be organized carefully and submitted to the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President. This material will be forwarded to the Research Award Selection Committee for consideration.

Materials submitted should include:

  • Research Statement (Maximum length: two pages)
A research statement prepared by the nominee explaining the objectives of their research or scholarship and its significance. This should address the broad trajectory of their research and how it has impacted (and is expected to impact) either the discipline or society more generally. The language of this statement should be understandable by reviewers outside the field.
  • Bio Sketch (Maximum length: two pages)
A biographical sketch is required for each candidate. This document should contain listings of professional preparation, academic/professional appointments, products or publications, and up to five synergistic activities. A form will be provided to each candidate for completion of the Bio Sketch.
  • FARE Forms
FARE forms from the past two years. Summer FARE forms can also be included if available for these two years.
  • Letters of Review
A minimum of two, but no more than three letters of review from colleagues (from academia or industry and community partners as appropriate to the work) supporting the quality of the nominee’s research and scholarly activities. Letters may not exceed two pages in length, and at least one letter must be from a Florida Polytechnic University colleague.

All materials must be grouped together into a single PDF document allowing some exception for materials in alternate media, and the entire document should not exceed 12 pages.

[At the close of nominations, an email will be sent to each nominee re-stating the above portfolio requirements as well as instructions on who the portfolio should be emailed to and how the letters of recommendation are to be submitted.]
